Curiosity has always been at the heart of the Emirati story. Long before cameras, it shaped journeys across land and sea, found expression in poetry and oral tradition, and fuelled a culture of observation, exploration, and expression. Today, that same instinct lives on through photography, where Emirati creatives are translating science, nature, and emotion into powerful visual narratives.

At the 10th edition of the Xposure International Photography Festival, audiences will encounter a compelling selection of work by three Emirati photographers whose practices span astronomy, micro-science, and conceptual art. Together, their images reflect a generation that moves confidently between heritage and discovery, drawing from diverse disciplines to expand the language of visual storytelling.

Looking to the Skies

For Yousuf Al Qasimi, curiosity begins above us. A night-sky photographer and member of the Emirates Astronomical Society, Al Qasimi has dedicated years to documenting the cosmos, capturing nebulae, star clusters, galaxies, and meteor showers in vivid colour and detail. His images revive a timeless sense of wonder, reminding viewers of humanity’s enduring relationship with the stars.

Beyond astrophotography, Al Qasimi is also a storm chaser, driven by a scientific interest in extreme weather phenomena. He travels hundreds of kilometres in pursuit of supercells and lightning storms, carefully positioning himself to frame moments where atmosphere and energy collide. His exhibition, The Sky – Within and Beyond, will be presented in the Nature zone at Xposure 2026, offering a rare glimpse into both the serenity and power of the skies.

Worlds Within Worlds

While some photographers look outward, Rashed Alsumaiti turns his lens inward, toward the microscopic. Using advanced micro-photography techniques, he reveals hidden structures in natural materials that are invisible to the naked eye. At extreme close range, everyday substances such as salt and vitamin C crystals transform into dramatic landscapes, abstract forms, and imagined creatures.

Presented in his exhibition Dancing Crystals at the Fine Art and Creative Expression zone, Alsumaiti’s work blurs the line between science and art. His journey began in 2009 with landscape photography before evolving into macro and micro exploration. Energised by curiosity, he continues to travel to remote locations, documenting nature and wildlife while constantly experimenting with scale and perception.

The Weight of Absence

Not all exploration is physical. For Ghada Ahmed Al Qasimi, photography becomes a space for emotional inquiry. Her work focuses on memory, silence, and the feelings that resist clear definition. Rather than presenting direct narratives, her images function as quiet reservoirs of emotion, inviting viewers to pause and reflect.

Her series Silence, exhibited at the Fine Art and Creative Expression zone, explores the tension between presence and absence. Drawing on repetition, subtle detail, and restrained composition, Al Qasimi allows meaning to surface gradually. As noted on her Xposure profile, her photographs do not impose interpretation, but encourage personal reflection, showcasing the confidence of a new generation of Emirati artists willing to explore the unknown.

A Confident Creative Future

Together, these Emirati photographers represent a broader cultural movement that draws strength from heritage while embracing experimentation across disciplines. Their work reflects a nation where creativity is informed by science, shaped by curiosity, and guided by a deep sense of place.

Held under the theme “A Decade of Visual Storytelling”, Xposure 2026 will take place from January 29 to February 4 at Aljada, Sharjah, offering a platform for Emirati and international voices to engage in dialogue through images.
