In keeping with its dedication to nurturing the young generation’s knowledge and providing them with hands-on and creative support, the seventh edition of the Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF) 2019, organised by FUNN – Sharjah Media Arts for Youth and Children, hosted a Stage Talk titled ‘Electronic Crimes’.

The session aimed to raise awareness on cybercrimes that endanger children on the internet and social media platforms.

Conducted by trainer from Community Police – Sharjah Police Headquarters, the awareness stage talk stressed the importance of paying close attention to the activities on the internet and encouraged children and youth to avoid dangers and risks when navigating the web and engaging on social media platforms. He underscored the importance of being extremely careful when chatting with strangers and cautioned them against disclosing any private information. He also advised the children and youth to refrain from opening any unknown, unreliable or suspicious links that have not come from a trustworthy source.

Trainer shared a series of tips on cyber security that helps to prevent cyber extortion and blackmail. He remarked that it was crucial to set strong passwords that combine letters and numbers and to never open any photos, videos and other links or download any application from unknown sources.

He also advised the attendees to inform their parents, relatives or police in the event of an extortion or blackmail, emphasising that silence about such incidents would only further encourage the hacker or blackmailer. He introduced them to Najeed Security Service, a campaign launched by Sharjah Police, offering people the opportunity to report cases that can threaten the safety and security of individuals, the community or the country. The identity of those reporting the crime would be kept strictly confidential, he added. Participants were asked to contact the Najeed Security Service on its toll-free number 800151, to ask for help or report electronic crimes.
