Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA) has announced the publication of its new journal, ‘Museums in the Middle East Journal’, with its first edition focusing on Best Practices of Art & Culture for People with Different Disabilities.

In line with SMA’s continuous drive to make all its museums fully open and accessible to all members of society, the journal will highlight and promote the best programs that support people with disabilities currently taking place at art galleries, museums, libraries, and cultural organizations around the Middle East.

SMA staff have contributed two articles to the first edition of the journal, which will be published on December 13 and will reach an audience of students, researchers, and art and culture professionals.

‘Museums in the Middle East Journal’ will also feature articles submitted by leading organizations and prominent figures involved in projects to promote the rights and skills of people with disabilities in locations such as Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and across the wider region.

Readers will gain an understanding of best practice initiatives being adopted by leading art and culture institutions that inspire creativity and foster a deeper sense of understanding of people with disabilities in their local communities.

SMA has been at the forefront of moves in the UAE to highlight the valuable qualities people with disabilities can bring not only to the workplace but also society and their right to be empowered so that they can lead full and productive lives.

H.E. Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, said: “I wish every success to this new and unprecedented initiative that aims to highlight best practices and extend even more opportunities to all members of our egalitarian society. I hope that this journal will be a platform through which artists and educators of people with disabilities will be able to learn more and exchange ideas and experiences.”

HE Manal Ataya, Director-General, Sharjah Museums Authority, said: “Museums and other cultural organizations play a crucial role in providing people of all ages with disabilities a space to illustrate their talents and enhance their unique abilities, it is important to empower people with special needs in their daily lives and to have their productivity, skills and talents recognized  and nurtured at every level.”
