One of the most important works launched and being exhibited at Xposure 2017 is the ‘Faces of Sharjah’ by award-winning photographer Muhammed Muheisen. The 12-image collection remained the centre of attraction during the first day of the International Photography Festival organised by Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB) running at the Expo Centre Sharjah.
Muhammed Muheisen, who is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, has been documenting the refugee crisis around the world for over a decade and is the founder of Everyday Refugees Foundation.
The collection is of portraits of people of different nationalities who have made Sharjah their home. It captures the moments, natural sceneries and inspiring architecture for which Sharjah is known. One of the pictures is of a 30-year-old Pakistani bank employee enjoying a sunset with his family at Al Khan in Sharjah, showing the multi-cultural side of the city.
Aspiring and emerging photographers who participated in Rick Friedman’s “Location Lighting” workshop, embarked on a journey of experiential insights for mastering the art of photography in a diverse lighting atmosphere.
The workshop, which kicked off during the first day of Xposure 2017, the International Photography Festival organised by Sharjah Government Media Bureau from Nov 22-25 at Expo Centre Sharjah, offered participants a hands-on experience of location lighting, as needed for portraits, events and corporate photography. As part of this workshop, participants joined Friedman for night-time and early morning photography sessions, thereby acquiring new skills in balancing colours and focus shots under different lighting situations.

The MENA region’s first ever Relay for Life concluded with a burst of positive energy on Saturday afternoon at American University Sharjah, when participants who had been walking the university’s athletics track over the previous 24 hours undertook a final ‘Big Balloon Lap.’ The stamina of the ‘relayers’ had received a considerable boost following the event’s closing ceremony, which had highlighted the incredible efforts made by everyone involved.
More than 2,000 relayers had taken part in the 24-hour walkathon, with individuals and institutions involved including 52 schools, six universities, eight partners, 37 government and private institutions, and 67 cancer survivors. Conducted in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, the event had been organised by Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), the not-for-profit organisation that supports cancer patients and their families.
“I am glad that I had cancer – it was God’s way of letting me share a positive story with other people.” That was the inspirational message given by Aalya Losloso, a Philippines national and cancer survivor who was participating at the UAE Relay for Life, a 24-hour cancer awareness walkathon and the first such event to be held in the MENA region.
Addressing an audience at the ‘Survivors’ Tent,’ a main feature of Relay for Life, which was held at American University Sharjah, Aayla said that positivity was something that was vitally important for those facing cancer. She also expressed her view that the support from her employer was fundamental in her personal battle with the disease.
“My advice to those who have cancer is to try not to get stressed, as the more stressed you are the more the cancer cells will multiply. I am very fortunate to be working for DHL and everyone there has supported me, my colleagues and my management, and that helped me to overcome my cancer in a short period of time. I am now nine years cancer-free. Many people with cancer or who have loved ones with cancer now come to me for advice and I feel very blessed to be in a position to help them because of my personal experience,” said Aayla.

With the object of the walkathon being one of fun and laughter in a carnival atmosphere, Relay for Life had arranged for numerous activities to take place around the track, enabling those taking a break from their walk – as well as the supporters not participating directly – to enjoy a wealth of entertainment.
