The Sharjah Light Festival has bathed the emirate’s Khalid Lagoon with multicolored lights, illuminating its waterfront attractions and architecture in a multidimensional spectrum. The Khalid Lagoon and Palm Oasis will be host to spectacular displays until February 17.
Cambodian artist Cindy Lo has designed a light show titled ‘A House in the Sea Under the Moonshine’ at Masjid Al Noor. Lo has created cosmic geometric shapes and colors with charming lights spreading in harmonious movement on the facade of the Mosque. They form abstract paintings, pictorial art and a mixture of images that interact with the structures and details of the beautiful building. The show embodies the creativity of Lo, who is known for paintings that evoke reality and connections between the infinitesimal and the infinite. The artist is also recognized for specializations focusing on the links between the ancestral image of the universe and contemporary cosmology.
The Light Carousel show at Khalid Lagoon in Sharjah features the work of artist Nicholas Gautier, who wields his highly technical skills and experience in lighting. Gautier utilizes advanced technology to produce a stunning, dynamic show using powerful searchlights. The show, aptly named the ‘Sky Tracer,’ starts with powerful searchlights scanning the surrounding skies and waters of the lagoon, while spinning lights send out an intense myriad of colors in all directions at high speeds –like a carousel freewheeling over the lagoon, lighting up the sky in a multidimensional spectrum.
In line with the on-going UAE Innovation Month, an event that is celebrating inventiveness and creativity across the seven emirates throughout February, The Flag Island in Sharjah has announced a weeklong activation, ‘Island of Science’, that is being held from February 15-21 at the destination – home to one of the tallest flag poles in the UAE and the world.
At the heart of a series of curated workshops and exhibitions is the concept of ‘environmental innovation’. Through these activations, the significant concepts of environmental technology, eco-efficiency, environmental design, recycling and upcycling, and sustainable design innovation will be made familiar to participants and visitors who will learn how to save and preserve the environment using new, innovative techniques, and turn the same into concerted community action.
“In the 21st century, innovation is an essential prerequisite of development. In 2015, the UAE nationalised its goal for innovation with the launch of the ‘Year of Innovation’, and since we have been fuelling this momentum towards reaching our goal of becoming one of the most innovative nations by 2021. The environment is the protective fabric under which the earth and all its diversity thrive. It is one sector that is desperate need for innovation, and the kind that will be most effective if generated on a large scale at the grassroots by community actors and innovators,” said Kholoud Al Junaibi, Manager of Flag Island.
Sharjah’s Al Majaz Waterfront, one of the most popular family venues in the UAE, has added even more attractions to its line-up, bringing in a vast range of games, arcades, rides and other activities, plus the ‘Oasis of Coloured Balls’ at its brand new outdoor Family Entertainment Venue.
As Al Majaz Waterfront takes full advantage of the weather as it settles down to ideal temperatures to suit all ages from toddlers to adults, the new features include such attractions as the train, the whopper water trailer, basketball, ring toss, kick the bucket, fishing frog and can smash.
The second addition, Oasis of Colored Balls provides the perfect outdoor chance for up to 50 children at a time to glide down one of four slides into the huge area of 150,000 of coloured balls.
